Abstract
For Black individuals in America, race-based violence underscores a collective trauma. This chapter reviews studies on racial trauma and mental health. More specifically, the chapter examines past research on actual and vicarious anti-Black violence and the potential consequences of repeated exposure to such trauma. In addition, summary results are presented from two recent studies in which vicarious violence and psychophysiological responses and mental health implications are assessed. Recommendations for research, practice, and policies addressing the deleterious impacts of vicarious racial traumas on Black mental health are also discussed.
