Abstract
This article explores the reasons traditionally underserved African-American students are not readily being identified, recruited, and selected for gifted education programs when they demonstrate gifted characteristics. Suggestions are given to redress the lack of training professional school counselors receive in handling the gifted education and the referral process, as well as the ‚deficit orientation‛ educators may hold regarding racially and culturally diverse students. Implications for future research are discussed.
