Abstract
In recent decades, there has been an increasing worldwide emphasis on adolescents’ academic achievement because local and national governments have recognized that high levels of achievement are required for students to become successful in an increasingly competitive global marketplace (Carnoy & Rhoten, 2002). As many nations wrestle with the best ways to prepare their students, they often rely on standardized test scores as indicators of student success, which are often compared between nations to determine which students are most prepared and able to compete in the global economy. On a more local level, students, families, and teachers rely on classroom grades to monitor student performance on a regular basis. Although these indicators vary between locales, they are often the types of assessments that are used to determine which students are successful and which are not.
