Abstract
The contemporary research in the realms of industrial ecology critiques the biological analogy of industrial systems but is yet to specifically investigate the concept of symbiosis - a tangent of biological analogy, as applied to eco-industrial parks, thus, providing a key motivation for this research. This dissertation primarily inquires into the concept of symbiosis as adapted and practiced in eco-industrial park developments, and, simultaneously investigates the means of strengthening the symbiotic construct through landscape design strategy. The articulation and enhancement of the symbiotic construct of a eco-industrial park, and, the generation of a landscape design strategy of green-switch, employable in spatially and environmentally constrained urban contexts, are key contributions of this dissertation. Through the interdisciplinary study in ecology, industrial ecology and landscape design, the dissertation attempts to redirect attention to basic concepts of symbiosis as a guide to planning harmonious co-existence among man, machine and nature.
