Addressing HIV/AIDS in the Black community
Trauma and mental health social work with urban populations: African-centered clinical interventions
This chapter will explore and discuss existing HIV/AIDS-related prevention and interventions strategies to utilize within the Black community. A special focus will be placed on those groups that are impacted most by HIV/AIDS which include Black men who have sex with men and Black women. This chapter is meant to serve as a call to action and bring to light the importance of utilizing culturally responsive HIV-related interventions to address the staggering statistics related to HIV incidence and prevalence among Black Americans. Moreover, these identified approaches will incorporate the complex co-occurring issues such as mental health, substance use, poverty, racism and discrimination, as well as stigma.
