Abstract

This chapter discusses social work practice with urban communities impacted by by HIV/AIDS. Assessing HIV infection rates and AIDS diagnoses requires a comprehensive lens. Utilizing ecological and structural systems, rather than exclusively individual behaviors. provides an opportunity to impact socio-historical, geographical, and structural racism that contribute to an ever-increasing pandemic of HIV/AIDS in communities of color, and specifically for African Americans. HIV/ AIDS work in urban communities requires a systemic examination of factors including historical experiences that are often overlooked because of the consistent focus on individual pathology and viewing HIV/AIDS through a moral lens.
