Abstract

This paper discusses the vision, history, and milestones of Southern University’s Urban Forestry program. Southern University’s Urban Forestry program is highlighted as a successful program for training minorities in Forestry and Natural Resources. In recent years minorities have become a majority in major cities. With this reality, there is a compelling case to involve minorities in environmental stewardships in urban areas. Urban forestry and its benefits are important to minorities. This paper examines the definition, ramifications, and benefits of urban forestry. It highlights the relationship between minorities and urban forestry and underscores the need to provide minorities with high-level training in urban forestry.
